Must have if you want threaded non-blocking networking. Above novice. Approaching or Below professional.
It has been a year since I bought this book. Yes, the threaded non-blocking networking code example is a must have.
Goes into great depths of explaining the how's and why's of iOS using Swift. The writing is clear and concise. His examples are useful for developing real applications.
This book, as it is entitled, is a deep dive for developers with experience. It does a great job at pulling together in a coherent way the multiple layers involved in rendering and animation.
A gem. When I get stuck in iOS, especially something related to fundamental Apple view APIs, I dive back into this book. The writing is crystal clear, and the author's understanding of the subject-matter is comprehensive. Swift coverage is a plus.
The book is badly structured and rambling. Author is determined to bombard us with everything he knows, rather than concentrating on providing a concise well structured teaching guide for the key fundamentals. You need a lot of time and patience to work thru the excess material, which is of little practical value.
Cramming on it! Oh wait!
Code examples in the book are not self-consistent; author frequently goes into a "snippet" of code without specifying where in the project that snippet actually goes, refers to instance variables that are never declared, and rushes through the example so quickly that you barely have time to catch all his mistakes, let alone end up with a comprehensible project that actually compiles and runs. Going to the authors github to download the code examples reveals that the code doesn't exist there at all! (in the specific case that prompted me to write this review, that goes for all of chapter 6 - I would have to spend more time to verify if any of the other sample code was, in fact, self-consistent or even present in the github repo)
All in al this feels like a production rushed to market with little review process or internal consistency for the code examples, which would be at least half the value of this book - if they were in fact, present.
